8 Tips for Improving Email Deliverability through Mailgun

Even though Mailgun can streamline the process of sending out bulk messages, you might find that not all of your messages are getting delivered. For whatever reason, some percentage of your emails probably never make it to their destination. They might even be generating the digital equivalent of a return to sender missive. Thankfully, there are a few solutions to this constant issue.

We asked the experts at Mailem.io for their favorite ways to solve this constant problem. Here are the tricks they shared to help improve email deliverability when using Mailgun.

1) Add Your Own Domain Name

Make sure that you add a custom domain name and check that your DNS system is configured properly. DNS verification is very important. Your emails will have a much better chance at being delivered if they’re coming from a legitimate domain that isn’t attached to one of the popular free online webmail services.

2) Comply with the CAN-SPAM Act

FTC guidelines specify what you should and shouldn’t send in an email. Complying with these guidelines can go a long way toward ensuring that people will actually see the emails you plan on sending them.

3) Check Your IP’s Reputation

Use online tools to check whether your IP address has ever been added to an email blacklist. If it is, then you need to take steps to have the block removed so nobody’s inbox mistakes your messages for the worst kind of spam.

4) Validate All Sign-up Forms

Mailgun actually comes with a series of sign-up forms, so you don’t have to worry about any hiccups involving the validation process. Simply send these to everyone who tries to get on your mailing list. When people manually tell the system that they want to receive a message, it’s more likely to get delivered.

5) Remind People to Add Your Address to their Safe Senders List

Consumer-grade webmail services allow users to add certain addresses to a list of senders who will always be considered clean by junk mail filters. Remind users to add your domain to their list. You can include some simple instructions to help out readers who might not be as tech-savvy as others. The more people you have on these lists, the more likely Mailgun will be to deliver a message.

6) Clean Off Your Mailing List

A majority of companies have dozens of bad addresses on their mailing list. Clean out anyone that you’ve been receiving regular bounce-back notifications from. You’ll also want to weed out anything that’s obviously bad. Malformed addresses can never accept emails and were probably put there by either bad bots or users who simply made a mistake when entering their email credentials.

7) Write Engaging Subject Lines

Putting something worthwhile in the subject line is important from a marketing standpoint, but it’s also vital when it comes to dealing with spam filters. Algorithms naturally find it difficult to tell between legitimate email messages and spam, so they look to the subject line for clues. If your subject isn’t unique, then it might accidentally flag your message as spam just to be safe.

8) Reduce the Frequency of Your Messages

Filters pay close attention to how often recipients get messages from any single address. If you’re sending out dozens of messages every day, then it’s more likely that your content will end up in your client’s junk mail folder. By writing more eye-catching subject lines, you can also increase the chances that your clients will actually open up a message and read it.

Improving Your Email Workflows Overall

Deliverability is only one facet of the email marketing game. Fortunately, Mailgun makes it easy to fix any problems you’ve been having in this department. Once you’re done making sure your messages get delivered, it’s time to start looking at all the other problems you might be having.
